If you are trying to build an audience, Twitter is a great platform. Unlike the other major social platforms, it’s an open network. That means that you have a better ability to reach people that you don’t already know.
But despite its power, new users are often confused about how to “make it work” for them. Many people give up before they’ve given it an honest try.
Seeking to dispel some of the confusion, I wrote a piece earlier this year called, How to Build an Audience on Twitter, in which I covered my basic methodology for using the platform. I’ve gotten a lot of follow-up questions, so I thought I’d do a deeper dive on a few particular points from the post. So here’s the first of a brief 3-part series, with live examples from my own Twitter account so that you can see how it works in practice.
This piece is about sharing a mix of original content and curated content, and finding the right balance for your audience. There are a lot of opinions and guidelines about the right content mix, such as the 80/20 rule (80% curated, 20% original), but my belief is that you have to find what works for your specific audience. Every audience is different, but if you are consistently providing value to them, they will be happy with what you’re doing—whether it’s curated content or original content.
