Selected Highlights from 2014

As we approach the end of 2014, I thought I’d close out the year by highlighting some recent articles for you. I sent a version of this summary to my mailing list last week—please subscribe if you want to get my e-mail updates!

All I can say is that I’m really thankful for the year I’ve had. If you’re a regular reader, you know that I started my own business at the beginning of 2014. I had no idea what to expect going into it. One year later, I feel lucky. I work with a bunch of great clients, helping each of them build and execute their content strategy. It’s been incredibly gratifying to help them amplify their success.

So here’s the quick rundown of what I’ve been up to:

Assessing

I gave myself a performance review this fall. I did something a little unusual with it—I made it public, in the form of a 4-part video series. My goal was to share what I’ve learned about running a new business so that perhaps others could benefit:

Building

In addition to the Glass Box Project (my “live” book project), I’ve also been developing an online course for authors about how to navigate the New Rules of publishing. I’ve been conducting research since March and I have constructed a detailed outline. Here’s a brief overview, stay tuned for more to come:

Writing

Looking back, I published 75 articles this year—most recently, talking about a book as an instrument in your content strategy:

  • Writing a Book: Is It Worth the Effort? http://bit.ly/why-write-a-book
  • Writing a Book: How to Get Started http://bit.ly/what-is-a-book

And, finishing up my 10-part series, Content Strategy for Entrepreneurs:

  • Hand Over the Megaphone http://bit.ly/CSE-09
  • Your Audience of Audiences http://bit.ly/CSE-10

But, by far, my most popular post for the entire year was:

  • The Basics of Branding in the Digital World http://bit.ly/branding-basics

I was honored to have it featured on the Text and Academic Authors Association’s blog as a part of “The most useful textbook & academic writing posts of the week: November 14, 2014.” See the mention here: http://bit.ly/TAA-111314.

Looking forward

I’m working on the following pieces to show authors, writers, and bloggers how to think differently about attracting readers. In today’s environment, it’s about creating relationships—not promoting. It takes real time and effort, but it works. Stay tuned for the following:

  • Marketing Without the Marketing
  • The Content Marketing Curve
  • How to Build an Audience on Social Media

Thank you for reading my work, encouraging me, and challenging me when I need it. I’m grateful to all of the new connections I’ve made this year, as well as all the long-timers who have made a difference to me and my career. If I can ever be of service to you, please reach out.
