As a kid, your mom may have told you this when you were getting in her way. It was her way of saying, “please go away.” Make yourself scarce.
I take this to have a different meaning now. In every realm that digital has touched, some aspect has become a commodity. It’s hard to monetize things that are a commodity.
Artists have to think differently about their business now. You can only monetize what is scarce. That concept hasn’t changed in 400 years. What’s scarce is different now, though.
The New Rules require that you make yourself scarce. A category of one. Do what no one else—or at least very few people—can do. That’s likely to come from who you are, how you do it, and why you do it, rather than what you do.
