This song is an examination of expectations vs. reality. Life is playing out on stage, and it often feels like you’re on display. You’re always preparing, practicing, and trying to get it “right.” But how is it that we define what’s “right?”
What we see in the movies (and other media, of course) sets unrealistic expectations for all of us. Then we end up being disappointed that it doesn’t live up to that model of perfection that we have constructed in our minds.
“Everything was supposed to be perfect,” the narrator whines—to the point of having the expectation of nature itself playing into this idea of perfection. The “thunder missed its cue” is not a realistic complaint, is it?
What’s the solution offered? Just keep trying, even though it’s futile: “We’ll just have to try this scene again, what else can we do?” Is it hopeful, or just a cycle of disappointment?
I always played this in three-four time, like a sea shanty. I still play it live that way. This version is completely different, which was Scott’s idea—along with the excellent bridge section.
