It’s an easy trap for us GenXers, but too much reflection can easily turn into inaction. It’s paralyzing at times. But you know, whatever.
My friends and family consistently say that this one is their favorite of my songs. Is it the relaxed vibe, the tense lyrics that work against it? Or maybe it’s the tasty slide guitar work by Scott. Whatever it is, it’s hilarious to hear my 4-year old niece sing all the words to this. She’s not allowed to say the “potty words” in my songs, though. In this song, that would be, “stupid as it sounds.”
In many of my songs, I like to examine the interplay between performer and audience—and this one is self-aware to the point of being self-conscious. It’s about letting “coolness” get in the way of connection, but I wanted it to be ambiguous about who’s talking to whom.
