The New Rules require that you provide some value before you ask for a sale. This tenet is at the heart of content marketing, and is the reason that you need a content strategy. In the digital realm, you connect over content. That content has to provide some value to your intended audience, so that you can build trust, authority, and the permission to ask for something in return.
However, you have to enter the relationship with a generous mindset—NOT a transaction mindset. Consumers are smart, and they are desensitized to sales pitches. They will see right through you if you try to sell before you have a relationship. Do the work and prove yourself first—provide genuine value. Be reliable and give of yourself generously. It’s good for you, and good for your business too.
