Empires Fall

Who would have thought it could happen here?

Spring is here, millions are getting vaccinated, and for the first time it feels like there might be an end to this ongoing national trauma. This comes as a relief, when we need it most.

The past 4-5 years have shown that we as a culture have deep-seated problems. Many of us want to address these problems, while others actively stand in the way of solutions. I’m currently reading Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson and she does a beautiful job highlighting how we got to where we are today. She is a solution.

In a momentary ray of hope, it’s still hard to look at our trajectory and not see that we are in decline. I’m not here to argue that empire of any sort is a good thing, but it’s still unsettling to see our culture’s place in the world diminish. On our watch.

We throw around a lot of ideals and we do so earnestly. These ideals take work though. I wrote this song after reading Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed by Jared Diamond. Art leaves a mark.

While this creation of mine won’t live up to Caste or Collapse, it can still be a carrier. In other words: 1) Share this if it helps you tell a story, or 2) better yet, share your own story.

Outcomes are not predetermined. It is up to us.

This project aims to catalyze conversations about the way we consume, share, and produce media. Among other things, this includes presenting “live” versions of works in progress like this one, stripped down to the bare essentials, with all the little nuances and imperfections.
